Holiday Plumbing Do's and Don'ts for Homeowners

Every year around late autumn, our schedule fills up fast, and it's not a coincidence. Between Thanksgiving dinners, out-of-town guests staying over, and endless holiday baking, your plumbing system gets put through a real workout. Systems that run fine with normal daily use can suddenly struggle under that extra demand.

Luckily, avoiding a holiday plumbing surprise is usually pretty simple. A few smart habits in the kitchen and bathroom go a long way toward keeping your holiday season stress-free.

The Kitchen: Do's and Don'ts

The kitchen sink is ground zero for holiday hosting accidents. With so much cooking going on, it is easy to let the wrong things slip down the drain:

  • DO scrape plates into the trash before rinsing.
  • DO run cold water while operating your disposal.
  • DO pour warm cooking fats, oils, and grease into a disposable container to cool, then throw them in the trash.
  • DON'T pour liquid grease down the drain. It hardens as it cools inside your pipes and traps other food debris.
  • DON'T put fibrous items like celery, onion skins, or potato peels into the disposal. They quickly wrap around the blades and cause jams.
  • DON'T pour harsh chemical drain cleaners down the sink when things slow down. They can damage your pipes and rarely solve the root cause.

The Bathroom: Do's and Don'ts

Guest bathrooms see a sudden spike in traffic during the holidays. Remind your family and guests to keep it simple when it comes to what goes down the toilet.

Only toilet paper and human waste belong in the toilet bowl. Even products marketed as "flushable" wipes do not break down quickly enough and are a top cause of sudden main line blockages.

If a toilet gets sluggish, a standard plunger is usually your best first move. But if plunging does not fix it right away, do not keep forcing it. That's often a sign of a blockage further down the line.

The Water Heater: Plan for the Demand

Back-to-back morning showers and constant dishwasher loads put serious stress on your hot water supply. If your system is already struggling, you'll notice it fast. Watch out for these warning signs before your guests arrive:

  • Water temperature fluctuating between hot and lukewarm
  • Rumbling or popping noises from the tank
  • Discolored or rusty-looking water
  • Slow recovery time between showers

When a Clog Is Telling You Something Bigger

It is completely normal to deal with a minor sink slow-down after a big cooking day. But pay attention if you notice a pattern. If multiple fixtures back up at once, or your shower gurgles when you run the bathroom sink, the issue isn't just the drain trap. A recurring clog usually means debris has accumulated deeper in your branch or main sewer line.
